Weeks Whitmore Funeral Home Obituaries

Let's break the cycle of road rage – cyclists and motorists need to adopt a better attitude to share Ireland's streets

For this is the no-potholes-barred confession of a red-light breaking, footpath-mounting, traffic-zigzagging cyclist. Alamy Cyclists and motorists are always at odds One who texts and carries hot coffee while navigating busy junctions, though thankfully not simultaneously.Pedestrians scurry from crossings as he approaches as if on the home straight of the Tour de France. He has hit off wing mirrors and ignored the shouts of their owners. He’s caused the cyclist behind him to rear-end him, after breaking suddenly having forgotten cars sometimes have to stop at traffic lights. Alamy Cyclists and drivers must share the same roads He hears not the cries of dismayed drivers nor those of fellow cyclists — or even, disastrously, those of the truck driver reversing toward him.He doesn’t wear a helmet, citing research he saw on Facebook — but didn’t actually read — that found it is in fact more dangerous to do so.And this mid-30-something has no light at the front, as it needs to be recharged, and has cycled home after six pints of beer.I tell you this — while keeping the handsome bikie’s identity top secret — because a battle is being waged daily on our commutes. Revved-up motorists and seething cyclists are slinging insults and waving fists — and even getting into brawls.Once, I flagged down a taxi and shuffled sleepy-eyed into the backseat, and in the next minute a guy was banging at the window, gesturing for me and the driver to disembark and fight him to the death. Alamy Drivers must be wary of cyclists on the road When we didn’t emerge for the scrap, the aggrieved cyclist had to content himself with bashing the car.The taximan explained he would like nothing more than to get out and beat this hipster to a pulp, but alas it would cost him his licence. He blamed the Green Party for this, though I am not quite sure how.We stopped at traffic lights where my new nemesis threw his bike in the middle of the...

Mitski, Drivin' N' Cryin', Ladies of LCD Soundsystem among top shows this week

Jones at Antone’s. Grammy Award winners for lifetime achievement are a pretty limited lot, but Jones is one of them. Famous early for his 1962 top-5 instrumental hit “Green Onions” with his band the M.G.’s, Jones went on to work with many of the biggest names in R&B, rock and soul over the decades. His entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame came within the Hall’s first decade (his 1992 class also included Johnny Cash and Jimi Hendrix). It’s fair to call this an opportunity to hear a living legend at Austin’s home of the blues. Local soul movers Tomar & the FCs open both nights. $25-$30. 9 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — P.B.Friday-Saturday: Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ at Continental Club. Hailing from Georgia, Kevn Kinney’s band sometimes got cast with Southern jam-rock stereotypes, but Kinney’s songwriting was always far too deep for such a simple classification. Three decades after a run of major-label records that put them on the map, the group remains a dominating live band, as they proved on a sweaty summer night at the east side Sahara Lounge a couple of years ago. It’s good to see them get this two-night weekend showcase at the city’s premier nightclub. The Mallett Brothers open Friday; Caleb Caudle opens Saturday. $20-$22. 10 p.m. 1315 S. Congress Ave. continentalclub.com. — P.B.Saturday: Sweetheart of the Rodeo Tour with Roger McGuinn & Chris Hillman, Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives at ACL Live. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Byrds’ landmark “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” album, this tour features Byrds co-founders McGuinn and Hillman backed by country star Stuart and his indeed quite fabulous bluegrass-and-beyond backing crew. They’ll play the album in full as well as other Byrds and Stuart material, plus a few favorites from the late Tom Petty, who produced Hillman’s 2017 album. $49.50-$79.50. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.
